Iceland Volcano Eruption 2011. The international airport Keflavik, Iceland closed on Sunday, May 22, 2011, after the volcanic ash and smoke Grimsvotn issue as far as 20 kilometers. According to news agency CBCnews, ash is expected to spread in Iceland for several hours, closing Keflavik and other airports on the island.
